Meal Preparation: Grocery Lists

In a recent job interview, I was asked to describe myself in one word.  Without hesitation I replied “picky.” Throughout my life, my mother has consistently reminded me that I am a very picky individual.  I am picky about clothing, picky about men, and picky about food, just to name a few.  Over the past (almost) year of marriage, I have come to realize just how picky I am about purchasing our groceries and planning our weekly meals.  Honestly folks, I do not believe I can hand the power of the grocery list over to anyone else.  My grocery lists are elaborate and probably a wee bit over the top.  These lists are divided up by category and a price is listed for each item.  If a coupon goes with the item, the coupon is listed along with the price after the coupon discount.  A few days ago I shared my menu plan for last week and the upcoming week. Dinner would be a disaster each night if I did not have my grocery list and menu plan.  These two tools are my secret to getting dinner on the table every night between 6:00 and 6:30.  This plan works but it also takes work.
My weekly grocery list is based on two things: items that are on sale and items that we need.  I do not deviate from this list unless the store is out of stock.  If I must have the item, I try to find a substitute of equal price or I simply hold out until the next sale.  My detailed grocery list gets me in and out of the store in about 45 minutes.  This time frame includes checking out with coupons and our trip to and from the store.  It goes to show that being prepared saves time.  Most Saturday’s I have my husband with me to push the buggy and unload at checkout.  While he unloads, I am able to watch the scanner to make sure the prices ring up correct.
Speaking of price, most of you know that I have a weekly grocery budget of $60 a week.  This $60 covers every single meal we eat for the entire week.  For our little family of two, it provides us with 42 meals.  To be fair, I will divulge that I place a $50 order with vitacost once a month to restock pantry essentials, which breaks down to an additional $12.50 a week for food.  Even with the vitacost order factored into the equation, we are only spending an average of $1.73 a meal.  Most of the ingredients used in our meals are organic, local, or low pesticide level foods, so $1.73 a meal is a bargain.
I exclusively grocery shop at Publix because I love the clean store, the availability of organic products and their generous coupon policy.  We also go the farmer’s market every Saturday to purchase local eggs, beef, and pork.  I wish we could purchase all of our vegetables at the market, but right now it is not financially possible.  Frozen vegetables are a huge bargain over fresh and this keeps me going back to Publix for the majority of our produce.  I have shared before that I utilize southernsavers.com and iheartpublix.com for sale and coupon matchups.  These two websites are indispensable to me in the meal planning process.  I hope the things I have learned and shared are able to help someone else who wants to feed their family real food on a budget.  Below, I have listed my shopping list for this week’s meals.  When menu planning, I try to incorporate as my items as I can which I already have on hand into our meals.  This means nothing goes to waste and we are never overflowing with groceries, but we have enough.

Publix – February 21, 2013

This Monday I start my new full-time job at the University of Alabama.  For the past 1 ½ years I have been studying for my CPA and doing part time work at three different places.  I am looking forward to the consistency of working the same hours at one place, five days a week.  With my other jobs, I never knew when I would be working, so I could squeeze in a load of laundry or baking a batch of muffins if I had part of the day off.  I will not really have the opportunity to do that anymore.  My wonderful husband has offered to take over doing laundry, so that leaves all the meal preparation up to me.  J.T. and I like to eat dinner between 6:00 and 6:30, because this gives us more time after supper to watch tv and relax.  On rare occasions when we eat after 7, it feels like by the time we eat dinner and clean up, it is time for bed.  If we want to continue to eat at our usual time, I will have to get dinner on the table fairly quickly after I arrive home from work.  Each week I always have a menu plan, but I have decided to get as much prep work done over the weekend as possible.  For example, if I know we are having soup one night, I will make the cornbread muffins and freeze them over the weekend.  This leaves only the soup for me to cook that night for dinner.  I have been doing this for the past few weeks and it has worked successfully.  Yesterday, I took the day off work for myself.  I spent all day in the kitchen and our freezer is busting at the seams!  Today, my body aches and I am very sore all over from standing on my feet all day.  However, I know it will be worth it next week when much of supper has already been prepared.

Publix – February 14, 2013

I am a few days late posting my grocery blog for the week.  Over the weekend, J.T. and I, along with my parents, my brother, and his fiancĂ©e, traveled to South Carolina.  We helped my grandfather, Granddaddy Ed, celebrate his 96th birthday.  It was a short trip and J.T. and I were exhausted after returning home last night, but it was worth the lack of sleep to be able to see Granddaddy and other family members.  Of course, Otis was in tow for our road trip.  That dog loves riding in the car and going places.  I think he was happy to be coming home yesterday since he is very routine oriented, just like his Mama.  We returned home around 5:00 and this gave me enough time to unpack, wash a load of laundry, bake a batch of brownies, and line a few other things up for the week.  I was pleasantly surprised to find the new items I ordered from UKonserve waiting at my doorstep.  I ordered a lunch box, 2 sweat proof icepacks, and a stainless steel water container.  One of the ice packs is for J.T.’s lunch box, but everything else is for me.  I needed something to pack my lunch in for my new full-time job, which I begin next Monday!  I am looking forward to having a job with daily, consistent hours and am excited to begin something new J

Publix – January 31, 2013

Since July of 2012, I have been blogging about my grocery trips to Publix and for the very first time I went over budget.  I knew it was going to be very close, but there were items we needed that I refused to go another week without.  At first I was a little upset that I went over my $60 limit, but it was only by $0.59 cents so I let it go.  I purchased staple ingredients such as flour, sugar, cheese, and olive oil.  If you missed my last post, the cheese will be enough for another month’s worth of J.T.’s Cheese Crackers.  I am so thankful that it is the beginning of a new month.  This means my budget numbers get refreshed and I get to see how we did overall for the month of January.  An excel spreadsheet helps me keep track of our month to month expenses.  There are fixed costs such as rent, power, cable, gas, water, cell phone, and insurance.  These costs are around the same amount each month – with the exception of power.  I about flipped a lid when we received our power bill in July!  Our variable expenses are broken down in more detail.  Food covers how much we spend at the grocery store, on meals dining out, and Otis (our doggie).  There are also separate categories for prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, and toiletry items.  The remaining expenses include fuel (& other car expenses), doctor co-pays, and miscellaneous.  When too many miscellaneous expenses accrue a red flag goes up.  Over the last nine months of marriage, I have learned that there is a fine line between sticking to the budget and enjoying life.  J.T. and I have been blessed, so we try to be good stewards of our money.  We don’t use credit cards and everything is paid for by cash or check.  However, if we have the money saved, it is okay to take a random trip to the beach or to go over budget during a weekly grocery store trip.  My Mama always says she wants the last check she writes to bounce, because when you leave this world you can’t take the money with you!

Publix - January 18, 2013

Yesterday, we had a not so fun visit to the emergency dog vet.  Otis is doing fair now, but still in quite a bit of pain.  Saturday afternoon, J.T. and I took Otis to play fetch on the tennis court close to where we live.  The dog loved chasing the tennis ball and he played very hard – a little too hard.  After returning home, we noticed that Otis was limping and having difficulty walking in general.  He immediately laid down, so I went and examined his paws.  My poor baby scraped the skin off his paw pads on the cemented tennis court.  All of his paws were a little bloody, but the back two were worse than the front two.  J.T. called the emergency vet line and they suggested that we take Otis to be looked over.   I put two pairs of my old running socks on Otis’s little paws and he limped out to the car.  While at the vet, I went into full-blow overprotective Mama mode.   That poor doctor was drilled about medicine, side effects, and anything else I could think of to ask.  About $150 later, we went home with a ten day round of antibiotics, a 5 day supply of pain medicine, and a new ear cleansing medicine.  Every penny is worth it to have my pooch feeling better.  The last time Otis was sick, he had to take the antibiotic, Keflex.  That didn’t go so well.  I hate giving Otis medicine because I have such strong feelings about the overuse of antibiotics.  Luckily, J.T. is off work on Monday and can keep Otis company as he heals and monitor his behavior while he takes the medicine.  Prayers for Otis during this time of sickness are greatly appreciated J

Publix – January 11, 2013

I received the book The Homemade Pantry as a Christmas gift from my brother (Christopher) and his fiancĂ©e (Gill).  I will now refer to them as Christopher and Gill on this blog, because I am tired of typing out titles!  I must admit that I am currently obsessed with this book!  I have almost read it cover to cover and have made a few of the recipes.  If you read this blog, you know that I am passionate about making items at home that most people usually purchase at the grocery store.  Upon reviewing our budget at the start of the New Year, I came to the shocking realization that I am spending $13.57 a week for J.T.’s cereal and milk.  That is almost 23% of our weekly grocery budget.  I believe that there has to be a cheaper alternative.  The price of milk is a constant.  Since we buy organic milk I will always pay $5.99 for a gallon and maybe more in the future.  The cereal, at $3.79 a box, is the main issue and J.T. consumes two of these 14 ounce boxes a week.   The wheels in my head have been spinning over creating a cheaper and healthier breakfast alternative for J.T.  The first source I consulted for this issue was The Homemade Pantry.  J.T. is an avid lover of his cold cereal, but I asked him if he liked instant oatmeal – the kind in the packets that are normally much sweeter and softer in texture than regular rolled oats.  He kindly agreed to try instant oatmeal and luckily The Homemade Pantry had a recipe.  I will blog about the recipe later, but it is very simple.  Basically you toast a batch of oats and pulse half of them with a little cinnamon, brown sugar (which I made!) and salt.   That’s it.  J.T. tried the oatmeal this morning and enjoyed it, but I can tell that he misses his cereal.  Now, I am on a quest to figure out how to make dry cereal in my kitchen – preferably something that is similar in taste and texture to Cheerios.  After browsing the internet, I have concluded that there are very few recipes on homemade dry cereal (besides granola).  Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated J

Publix – January 4, 2013

The holiday season is officially over and things are beginning to return to normal around our house.  I will thoroughly miss eating lunch with my husband every day and all the extra time we were able to spend together.  We finally were able to celebrate my December birthday this past Friday evening.  While I always celebrate with my family on my actual birthday, J.T. and I also have a “birthday date” that is just the two of us.  We must be getting old, because I wanted to go out to dinner and then rent a movie to watch at home on the couch.  I picked the movie “Trouble with the Curve,” a story about an Atlanta Braves scout.  The movie was enjoyable but some of the language was a little intense.  I also resumed my weekly grocery store trip on Friday.  I was surprised to find organic coffee and milk on sale.  It makes me happy to pay less than $6 for a gallon of milk occasionally!
